Gaowangjie is a national nature reserve.

Gaowangjie is a state-owned forest farm established in 1958, covering a total area of 200,000 mu, with forested land spanning 153,000 mu and a forest coverage rate of 88.4%. The average annual temperature is 12.5°C, and the microclimate here is distinct. The temperature may be high but never feels scorching, nor does it get bone-chillingly cold when low.

Seven major streams—Daxi, Jinlongxi, Heidongxi, Gezhuxi, Changshadong, Maxi, and Chunmuyā—host 70,000 mu of primeval secondary forests in Gaowangjie, forming diverse plant communities. To date, 863 species of woody plants from 100 families have been identified, including over 30 nationally protected tree species such as Davidia involucrata, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Manglietia insignis, and Emmenopterys henryi. Rare wildlife such as the golden snub-nosed monkey, Lady Amherst’s pheasant, and Wuling rock frog also inhabit the area. Standing atop Dingtangwangta, the highest peak in Gaowangjie, one can gaze southward at the lush green hills of Luxi and northward at the clear blue waters of Qifeng.

Due to the steep terrain, rugged topography, and rich vegetation, the area boasts numerous streams and clusters of waterfalls. Major streams such as Daxi, Jinlongxi, Gezhuxi, and Heidongxi flow into Qifeng Lake. These streams are formed by the convergence of many smaller tributaries, creating a network of interconnected waterways. Walking along the streams, you can see ancient trees clinging to cliffs and waterfalls cascading down, startling fish below. The best times to visit Gaowangjie are: in spring, when mountain flowers bloom in vibrant colors, filling the air with fragrance and vitality; in summer, when dense foliage offers cool shade across thousands of acres of lush greenery; in autumn, when fruit-laden branches and colorful fallen leaves carpet the ground in gold; and in winter, when snow blankets the landscape, trees glisten with frost, and icicles hang crystal-clear. In the flatter areas of Gaowangjie, you can stroll leisurely, while the more rugged spots invite rock-climbing adventures. With serene mountain trails, a comfortable climate, secluded villages where chickens and dogs can be heard, and an abundance of natural charm, Gaowangjie is truly an ideal destination for sightseeing, summer retreats, exploration, and discovery.
