Pushi Town in Luxi County was once a thriving port where the ceaseless flow of boats brought about a golden age, earning it the title of “Little Nanjing.” Although the bustling port scene no longer exists and the once affluent families have faded into obscurity, walking through the plain-looking street facades and entering through narrow, dim entrances reveals that the deep, historic mansions still faintly echo the prosperity of the past. Well-known residences in town, such as the Ji Family Courtyard and the Zhou Family Courtyard, are ancient mansions hidden behind ordinary streets.

The scale of the streets in Pushi is pleasantly human. Lining both sides are old, dim, single-story brick-and-timber houses, many of which serve as small shops facing the street. Beyond these first-floor gray, low-rise storefronts, the space suddenly opens up to reveal a towering mansion gate. The surrounding wall and the gate’s facade enclose a slightly narrow courtyard space, enhancing the majestic aura of the entrance. The gate itself is made of two solid panels of high-quality timber, and its deep color and grain suggest the exquisite decorations within and the century-long history of the family.

Enclosed by high walls are two-story wooden buildings, with windows and floors crafted from premium materials, featuring delicate carvings that are vividly lifelike. The layout is symmetrical, centered around three inner courtyards and the main hall. The main hall serves as the primary space for family living and leisure, adjacent to the courtyard for ample natural light. The side rooms are comparatively darker and mostly used as bedrooms.

The courtyard gate features a unique latch that may look ordinary but holds a clever secret. Should a thief manage to break in and steal, they’d likely be trapped inside. Outsiders can pull at it without budging it, but the owner can easily open it. It turns out that beneath the roughly crafted yet exquisitely made wooden latch lies a small mechanism that can be activated with a finger—like a kind of secondary lock—that secures the latch. To unlock it, one must use the middle finger to lift it slightly upward while pulling the door.
