Jingzhao Hall

Jingzhao Hall is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

Located in Yamen Ancient Fortress, Dalan Town, Luxi County, Jingzhao Hall is a mountainous ancient building with a history of over 500 years. Built on a foundation of red sandstone, the oval-shaped structure rises from the ground and forms a closed defensive perimeter made up of the wall base, red earthen brick walls, and watchtowers. At its core is a large courtyard with horse-head-shaped gable and hip roofs. The entrance courtyards are diverse, interconnected yet still reflecting traditional concepts of axis, orientation, and enclosure. Within the intimate inner spaces, a network of lanes forms the skeleton of the settlement. Ingeniously designed doors, windows, railings, lintels, brackets, and carved ornaments are highlighted through relief carving, openwork, and engraving techniques at prominent, well-lit, and ventilated spots — all demonstrating the exceptional craftsmanship of the artisans. It embodies a distinctive personality and emotional spirit marked by simplicity, ingenuity, and vitality, making it a model of rural architecture in western Hunan. Jingzhao Hall not only presents itself as an exemplary rural architectural form but also highlights the important archaeological value of the military heritage series associated with the Miao Frontier Wall in western Hunan. Its construction provided a vital thoroughfare connecting the once isolated and remote region of western Hunan to the outside world, playing a profound role in developing the mountainous areas of western Hunan and boosting the economy of Luxi County.
