Memorial Tower of Liu Shazi

The Memorial Tower of Liu Shazi is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhengding County.

On November 13, 1982, it was announced by the People's Government of Zhengding County as a county-level key cultural relic protection unit.

Located in the courtyard of the Exhibition Hall of Militia Struggle History of Gaoping Village, Quyangqiao Township, 16 kilometers northwest of Zhengding County town, it covers an area of 23 square meters. The tower faces south and is made of white marble. It was erected in December of the 37th year of the Republic of China. The body of the tower is 0.48 meters wide and 1.35 meters high. The base, body, pedestal, and top are all square in shape, with an overall height of 4.7 meters. The front is inscribed with “Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Tower”, the reverse side bears an elegiac address, the east side features brief biographies of two martyrs—Liu Shazi and Sun Dianwen, and the west side features brief biographies of fifteen martyrs including Sun Zhenxiang and Zhou Laonan. At the top of the tower stands a statue of an Eighth Route Army soldier holding a rifle at attention, while the pedestal is surrounded by white marble reliefs depicting militiamen in battle.

During the War of Resistance Against Japan, the villagers of Gaoping Village engaged in brave “tunnel warfare” and a series of anti-Japanese struggles. “Liu Shazi” is a representative martyr who sacrificed his life in the village’s resistance efforts. Liu Shazi was a renowned militiaman combat hero during the tunnel warfare. Born in 1916 in Gaoping Village, Zhengding County, Hebei Province, he served as the leader of the village guerrilla squad in 1940, joined the Communist Party of China in 1942, became the captain of the village militiamen in 1943, and was awarded the title of Special Class Combat Hero of the Fourth Sub-District of Central Hebei in 1944. He died in battle during the defense of Gaoping on March 22 of the lunar calendar in 1945.
