Assembly Point for the Anti-Exaction of the Red Donation Protest Demonstration

The Assembly Point for the Anti-Exaction of the Red Donation Protest Demonstration is a cultural relics protection unit of Zhengding County.

On November 13, 1982, it was designated as a county-level key cultural relics protection unit by the People's Government of Zhengding County.

It is located on the former site of the theater in front of the Fu City God Temple in the Southwest Street of Zhengding Town.

The incident took place on June 16, 1927. At that time, intimidated by the overwhelming might of the Northern Expedition Army and on the eve of the retreat of the Fengtian Army stationed in Hebei, in order to extort wealth from the people, they proposed pre-collecting the 1928 land and grain taxes, and additionally levying a “Red Donation” of 2.5 yuan per mu of land. In fact, the land and grain taxes for that year had already been pre-collected in the first half of 1927, and Zhengding had also suffered from a hailstorm, leaving the people’s lives in extreme hardship. Under the direct leadership of Comrade Xie Xuehai from the Provincial Committee, the CPC Zhengding County Committee, responding to the strong public demand to resist warlords and unfair taxes, decided to take advantage of the traditional temple fair on the 17th day of the fifth lunar month at the City God Temple to mobilize the masses to protest against paying the 1928 “first-half tax” and the “Red Donation.” On June 16, over ten thousand people were organized and gathered at the pre-designated square at the northwest corner of the theater in front of the City God Temple. After a brief mobilization speech by Yin Yufeng, the Secretary of the CPC Zhengding County Committee, the highly spirited crowd, holding large banners reading “Oppose the Red Donation,” marched straight to the county government office. Many visitors attending the temple fair also spontaneously joined the procession and stormed into the county government office. After four hours of struggle, the puppet county magistrate agreed to the farmers’ demands, and immediately issued a notice postponing the collection of next year’s land and grain taxes and exempting the “Red Donation.” The struggle achieved victory.
