He Bingyan Square

He Bingyan Square serves as a patriotic education base.

He Bingyan Square is located on the west side of Yancheng Park in Songzi City, adjacent to He Bingyan Avenue.

General He Bingyan was a native of Songzi, Hubei Province. He was a proletarian revolutionary, a founding general of the People's Liberation Army, and the first commander of the Chengdu Military Region. As a renowned one-armed general in the Chinese military, he made outstanding contributions to China’s national independence and the liberation of its people. To honor his great achievements and inspire future generations, the Songzi Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the People’s Government of Songzi City completed the construction of He Bingyan Square in 2011.

The square covers an area of 3,484 m² and is designed in the shape of a regular pentagon. The overall architectural design centers around the theme of “Hero. Glory,” using the military medal as a layout element. The continuously ascending steps symbolize the glorious journey of General He Bingyan’s life, while the central five-pointed star radiates outward. A statue of General He Bingyan stands atop the five-pointed star, embodying the hero’s strong fighting spirit, noble character, and great honor. The overall landscape is divided into five levels: the first level consists of the mountain and natural vegetation; the second level features a tree-lined screen; the third level is a story background wall that uses a combination of reliefs and text to depict key moments in General He Bingyan’s revolutionary career; the fourth level is the statue of General He Bingyan, which stands 4.7 meters tall, symbolizing the 47 years of his glorious life; the fifth level is a step inscribed with his life story, briefly recounting the general’s life and major achievements. The materials used in the square are primarily light gray, dark gray, and dark red stone, reflecting both the attributes of red culture and commemorative significance.

After its completion, the square was officially designated as a Patriotic Education Base of Songzi City, a Patriotic Education Base of Jingzhou City, and a Model Base for Party Member Education. In 2012, it was included in the “Top Ten Revolutionary Sites of Jingzhou City.”
