Tomb of Wan Mizhai

The Tomb of Wan Mizhai is a cultural relic protection unit of Hubei Province.

Located in Wanjiagang, Fengshuyuan Village, Dahe’an Town, Luotian County. Wan Mizhai (1488–1578), whose given name was Shiqian and courtesy name Mizhai, was a renowned physician who was posthumously honored as the “Sage of Medicine” in the early Qing Dynasty. The tomb covers an area of about 40 square meters, and its earthen mound has been almost leveled. In front of the tomb stand three steles, each 0.7 meters high and 0.4 meters wide, inscribed with biographical details of the deceased.

Wan Mizhai (1488–1578), a native of modern-day Dahe’an, Luotian, was a prominent physician of the Ming Dynasty during the Jiajing and Wanli eras, renowned alongside Li Shizhen. He had expertise in various medical fields, especially pediatrics, gynecology, measles, and smallpox, and offered unique insights into health preservation, maternal and infant care, and preventive medicine. Wan Mizhai authored numerous works, including his magnum opus, the 13-volume Complete Medical Works of Wan Mizhai, totaling 1.5 million characters.
