It is one of the ancient eight scenic spots of Jianshi County, located halfway up the mountain behind Chaoyang Temple on the outskirts of the county town. Legend has it that it was where Monk Yufeng refined immortal pills. The great Song Dynasty poet Huang Tingjian wrote: “Ancient woods rustle in the wind at the cave mouth. In days of old, people escaped their cages here. Moreover, there’s a trickle of water before the cliff—perfect to cleanse the dust from one’s heart and follow the hermit’s way.” On the left wall at the cave entrance, the three large characters “Awakening Lion Cave” are inscribed by Shi Ying, an elder statesman. The upper walls inside the cave are covered with poems and writings by literati throughout the ages, some of which can still be faintly seen. Tianchi Temple: Located atop Fengguan Mountain, it was first built in the mid-Ming Dynasty and renovated during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty. Originally, it consisted of the Buddha Hall, Patriarch Hall, Guanyin Hall, Eighteen Arhats Hall, Jade Emperor Tower, Lüzu Pavilion, and Lingguan Hall. It was gradually destroyed after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It has now been partially restored, with three temples: the Buddha Hall, Patriarch Hall, and Guanyin Hall.
