Martyr Zhuojie's Place of Martyrdom
Martyr Zhuojie's Place of Martyrdom is a classic red tourism attraction.
Martyr Zhuojie's Place of Martyrdom is located within the Martyrs' Cemetery in the West District of Yongcheng City.
Zhuojie, female, originally named Zhu Liangyu, was born on January 13, 1925, into a fallen landlord family in Chengguan Town, Gushi County, Henan Province. In April 1938, a political work team from the Anti-Japanese Youth Corps of the Fifth War Zone of the Kuomintang, led by members of the Chinese Communist Party, arrived in Gushi. Zhuojie became the youngest female member of the group. In June, at the age of 14 and driven by her desire to resist Japan and save the nation, Zhuojie bid farewell to her family and resolutely left Gushi, firmly embarking on the revolutionary path. In December 1942, she was admitted as a member of the Chinese Communist Party. In early 1943, Zhuojie was appointed as the publicity officer of the Second District of Buning County. In October 1944, Zhuojie and 20 other cadres from Henan set out from the Yanfu Area, crossed the Jinpu Railway, and arrived at Shanchengji, the headquarters of the Fourth Division, in Yongcheng County. Soon after, she was appointed as the organizational minister of the Yuting District Committee of the Communist Party of China in Yongcheng County. In March 1945, she became the deputy secretary of the Jiangkou District Committee of the Communist Party of China in Xuefeng County. In mid-August 1946, under the adverse situation of the enemy being strong and our forces weak, and in accordance with directives from her superiors, the main forces of the Eighth Sub-district of the Yu-Wan-Su Military Region were ordered to fight outside their base areas. She declined the organization’s offer of care and resolutely chose to stay behind to continue the struggle against the enemy. She was soon surrounded by over a thousand enemy troops from the New Tenth Brigade of the Nationalist 58th Division, along with the county security regiment and the returning home regiment. Due to being four or five months pregnant and suffering from extreme exhaustion, after all her comrades had broken through the encirclement, she collapsed unconscious to the west of Lianglou Village and was subsequently captured by the enemy. After being taken to the county town, the enemy subjected Zhuojie to brutal interrogations and various forms of torture. Zhuojie remained unyielding and indomitable, displaying great righteousness. While denouncing Chiang Kai-shek for instigating the civil war and bringing disaster to the country and its people, she continuously cursed the enemy’s atrocities. In the early hours of October 15, 1946, Zhuojie was taken by the enemy to a desolate area near the Chongfa Temple Pagoda on the northern outskirts of the county town, where she heroically sacrificed her life at the age of 21.
After the liberation of the whole country, in memory of Zhuojie, the Yongcheng County Committee and County Government of the Communist Party of China established the "Yongcheng Martyrs Memorial Hall" in 1951, where they recorded her biography and painted her portrait. In 2005, the Yongcheng Municipal Committee and Municipal Government erected a monument at the site where Martyr Zhuojie was martyred.
