Jianshi Confucius Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Hubei Province.

Jianshi Confucius Temple (Caiziba Community, Yezhou Town, Jianshi County, Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture).

Jianshi Confucius Temple, also known as the Temple of Confucius, was originally called the Xuegong (Imperial College) and historically referred to as the Confucius Temple. It is located on Chaoyang Avenue, Caiziba Community, Yezhou Town, Jianshi County, Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hubei Province. The temple originally comprised ten individual buildings, arranged along a central pathway, with the Chongsheng Shrine at the lower end and the main Dacheng Hall as the principal structure. On either side were the corresponding East and West Side Halls, as well as the Minghuan (Memorial for Meritorious Officials) and Xiangxian (Memorial for Local Sages) Shrines. The entire complex was enclosed by walls, covering an area of approximately 6,037 square meters. Today, only the Dacheng Hall and the Jingsheng and Yuzhen Towers remain, occupying a built-up area of 262.76 square meters. In 2000, the Jianshi Confucius Temple was relocated from the compound of the Jianshi County Committee to the southern foot of Fengguan Mountain.

The Jianshi Confucius Temple was first built during the Yuan Dynasty, specifically in the Dade era of Emperor Yuan Shizu. It was renovated in the seventh year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty but was completely destroyed due to warfare. The current structure was supervised by Xiong Qiyong, the magistrate of Jianshi County, in the fourth year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty. To this day, the beams still bear the inscription “Supervised by Magistrate Xiong Qiyong, Tongzhi 4th Year.”

The Jianshi Confucius Temple is a shrine dedicated to commemorating and worshipping Confucius, the great thinker, statesman, and educator. Before the rise of academies, it also served as a school focused on teaching Confucian classics. It functioned as a state-administered educational and ceremonial site that combined the roles of education and Confucian worship. It is an important center for Confucian activities in Jianshi County and a representative architectural structure of Confucian culture.

From October to December 2018, the Jianshi Confucius Temple underwent comprehensive restoration, along with environmental improvement and lighting projects. The effective preservation and rational use of the Jianshi Confucius Temple will have a positive and far-reaching impact on the development of cultural education and the cultivation of qualified talent in Jianshi County, fostering harmonious local customs and building a harmonious society. It will also play a unique role in developing the county’s cultural tourism industry and advancing its cultural tourism initiatives.

Jianshi Controlled Zone: Extending 10 meters outward from the protected area.

Yezhou Town: [Geographical Environment] Yezhou Town is located in the northwest of Jianshi County and serves as the seat of the Jianshi County Committee and County Government. It is the political, economic, and cultural center of the entire county. The town borders Wushan County and Fengjie County under the jurisdiction of Chongqing Municipality to the northwest, neighbors Enshi City to the southwest, and connects to Changliang and Sanli townships within the county to the east. The town covers a total area of 372.64 square kilometers and has a combined urban and rural population of 114,000.
