Wolongtu Mongolian Garden Scenic Area

Wolongtu is located 4 kilometers northwest of the county town. It is a place that has long captivated the imagination. According to local folklore in Chabei: the grassland beneath our feet was once a land plagued by a drought demon in ancient times. For nine out of ten years, there was severe drought, and at its worst, not even a blade of grass could grow, making it impossible to sow crops. To save the people here, the Jade Emperor dispatched two dragons to reside permanently in the area to regulate the rainfall as needed. One green dragon lay to the east, and one white dragon lay to the west. Between the two dragons was a pool of water, serving as their play area. This pool never dried up, even in the driest times. It is said that there were two natural springs at the bottom of the lake, continuously gushing water. Over time, the two dragons passed away. The green dragon to the east transformed into Green Dragon Mountain, and the white dragon to the west became White Dragon Mountain. The pool of water is called “Kangbanuoer” by the local Mongolian people, meaning “beautiful blue lake”; the Han people call it “Nanhaizi,” meaning “great and abundant lake.”

“Wolongtu” is a Mongolian term meaning “an oasis surrounded by mountains.” This oasis is known as Meiling Scenic Spot, the main attraction of the tourist area. Meiling is vast and green, covered with rare flowers and plants, and teeming with birds and animals. Historically, it was a settlement and hunting ground for northern nomadic peoples. Near this site, a Liao-Jin era Mongolian tomb was discovered, containing numerous artifacts such as pottery jars, bronze ware, and gold and silver jewelry. Legend has it that over 600 years ago, after being defeated by Zhu Yuanzhang’s rebel army, the last emperor of the Yuan Dynasty fled north with his concubines and a large amount of treasure. While in the Kangbao region, he was ambushed by the rebel army of Little Ming King and, in panic, lost the imperial jade seal of successive Chinese dynasties—the “He Shi Bi Imperial Seal”—near Meiling, adding to the area’s mystique. Folklore also tells that Genghis Khan, on his triumphant return from the Wild Fox Ridge, was enchanted by the beautiful scenery of Meiling. He stopped briefly to shave and groom himself, when suddenly five dragons descended from the sky, danced around him, and lingered, captivated by the view, forgetting their “dragon palace.” They then transformed into several mountain peaks resembling dragons, stretching continuously—these are the Wolongtu Mountains. Later, due to the area’s abundant resources, a village formed here. Coupled with the legend of Genghis Khan shaving here, it was named “Tituizhuang” (literally “Haircut Village”).

The Wolongtu Mongolian Garden Scenic Area was established in May 1995. It features 50,000 acres of pristine grassland and is world-renowned for its blooming red spider lilies and gatherings of skylarks. Throughout all seasons, the area maintains a unique climate where the wind direction changes four times a day. The scenic area includes Uyghur and Mongolian cultural gardens, off-season vegetable and fruit picking, as well as nurseries and flower viewing gardens. It also integrates travel, entertainment, dining, accommodation, and fruit picking, making it an ideal golden destination for tourism and vacation.
