The Imperial River water system is 1,900 meters long, beginning at Longting Lake in the north and ending at Bao Gong Lake in the south. There are 11 bridges over the river, 6 of which function as both scenic bridges and municipal bridges for transporting passengers and goods, plus 14 small landscape bridges on both banks, making a total of 20 bridges. Along the river from north to south are five scenic sections: Jijin Garden, Chunhua Garden, Xianyin Garden, Qiuyun Garden, and Dongning Garden. Both banks are shaded by lush trees, dotted with pavilions, and echo with the sounds of songs and operas from north to south. The entire river section sees continuous traffic of tourist boats.

The six municipal bridges are replicas modeled after famous Song Dynasty bridges, making the Imperial River a “Song Bridge Expo Park.” The design and construction of the bridges follow the principle of “one bridge, one view, highlighting the charm of the Song Dynasty.” The paths along the banks are paved with cobblestones, providing a pleasant environment for leisure, sightseeing, and fitness.

The boat tour starts at the southeast corner of Xisi Bridge in the southern section of the Imperial River. From the dock, looking south, you can see the Henan Museum along the lake, and to the west, the nearby Bao Gong Temple on the western bank of Bao Gong Lake. Actually, to the east lies Kaifeng Prefecture, but it is hidden from view by surrounding buildings. Small swan-shaped boats and other vessels dot the lake.

The Imperial River was excavated in 2006. On October 1st of this year, the river’s tourist boating officially opened to navigation. This 1.9-kilometer-long waterway crosses 11 Song-style bridges, making it the urban water system with the most connected bridges in China. It links Bao Gong Lake in the south to Longting Lake in the north, with continuous Song-style architecture along both banks enriching the views for visitors.

Drifting along the river while singing adds a new dimension to understanding and experiencing the history and culture of Kaifeng. The entire Imperial River connects the densest concentration of scenic spots in China. Within 4 square kilometers along the river, there is 1 AAAAA-level, 4 AAAA-level, and 2 AAA-level scenic areas. As the largest and most beautiful lake in Kaifeng, Longting Lake holds the ruins of palaces from six dynasties beneath its waters, stirring deep thoughts.

Pavilions, towers, railings, and theaters; the shimmering lights and paddling oars create a scene where one feels as if cruising through a painting. The stunningly beautiful riverside landscape, full of Song Dynasty charm, has also made the Imperial River the only water tourism project in our province that combines ancient architecture appreciation, opera performances, Song ci music and dance, light displays, shopping, and gourmet food.

As night falls and moonlight shimmers on the water, the once bustling city of Kaifeng transforms under the lamp-lit scenery into an implicit and meaningful Song Dynasty poem. In the five scenic areas of the Imperial River — such as Jijin Garden and Chunhua Garden — visitors can savor the timeless charm of ci poetry like “Willow-lined banks, morning breeze, and the waning moon,” while enjoying authentic Song ci music and dance, Yu Opera, and folk music in exquisitely designed settings like “Corridor Fairy Terrace” and “Winding Wooden Bridges,” experiencing the true “sounds” of Kaifeng.

Back then, Meng Yuanlao longed for Bianjing in his dreams from Jiangnan and wrote the “Dreams of Splendor in the Eastern Capital” in melancholy — “New songs and laughter echo along tree-lined lanes and flower-filled streets, music plays in teahouses and taverns.” Today, boating on the Imperial River is the clever people of Kaifeng giving you back a thousand-year-old memory of their city.

Walking as if in a painting, boating as if drifting within one. The Imperial River, crafted over seven years, has finally opened to navigation. The Kaifeng Imperial River water tourism project has captured the attention of countless people. Cruising on the river, we feel the charm of the ancient capital of the Song Dynasty, experience the beauty of the water and scenery, and more importantly, enjoy the leisure and the power of culture.

As a key component of the Song Dynasty water system project, the trial operation of the Imperial River water tourism project connects the Longting Lake scenic area with the Bao Gong Lake scenic area, revitalizing Kaifeng’s lifeline and greatly enhancing the city’s charm. This connection links two lakes and forms a flowing scenic route, elevating the city’s taste and competitiveness. It also connects major tourist attractions within the city, creating a new highlight of cultural Kaifeng and propelling the city’s leapfrog development.

Cultural heritage shapes the image of the Song capital. Experience the “Water City of the North” and immerse yourself in the charm of the Song Dynasty. For Kaifeng, known as the “Venice of the East,” water is a vital cultural element. However, the presence of many lakes within the city that were not interconnected was somewhat regrettable. The navigation of the Imperial River stirs the city’s waters and brings water-based activities to life, showcasing the unique charm of Kaifeng’s water system. Traveling on classic, classic-style Song Dynasty boats and admiring the richly traditional Song-style scenery along the banks, the visitor’s journey becomes a process of appreciating the culture of the Great Song. In promoting the inheritance of water and Song cultures, the opening of the Imperial River further enhances the image of Kaifeng as the Song capital, making cultural development more distinctive and powerful.

While launching water transport, our city has renovated shantytowns along the riverbanks, improving the urban environment and making Kaifeng more beautiful. With better scenery and more recreational opportunities, the navigation of the Imperial River not only makes out-of-town visitors fall in love with Kaifeng but also “brightens” the happy lives of the locals.
