Kaifeng Bookstore Street is one of the world’s two great ancient streets, renowned alongside Tokyo’s Kanda Book Street in Japan. Of course, bookstores aren’t only found on Bookstore Street, but the rich and profound cultural atmosphere, the leisurely and elegant old-world charm that you can experience there, simply cannot be found anywhere else. Stepping into Bookstore Street is like entering a thousand-year-old academy or stepping into an exquisitely classic art gallery. Most of the buildings along the street are two-story structures in traditional style, featuring blue bricks with white mortar, small tiles on the roof, upturned eaves and corners, sloping rooftops with floral ridges, all in a simple and elegant style. Many shop walls, windows, doors, and railings are adorned with uniquely shaped wood carvings, some even inlaid with artistic sculptures of figures, flowers, plants, and animals.
