The Cliffside Gallery is the essential route to Guoliang Village, also known as Guoliang Tunnel. Stretching 1,250 meters, it is a mountain tunnel. Its classic appeal lies in the human spirit behind its excavation. Also referred to as the "Cliffside Gallery" (or the Cliffside Gallery of Wanxianshan), construction began on March 9, 1972, and it was opened to traffic on May 1, 1977. It is 6 meters wide and 4 meters high, carved into a 110-meter-high, 1,250-meter-long cliff face at a 25-degree incline. It was hewn out by the people of Guoliang Village using nothing but their lives and determination to turn an impassable barrier into a thoroughfare. Without any machinery, the entire tunnel was chiseled out by hand, hammer by hammer and chisel by chisel. It can be said that the Guoliang Tunnel is a testament to the Guoliang villagers’ embodiment of the unyielding spirit of the mythical Foolish Old Man who removed mountains.

Walking inside the Guoliang Tunnel, you’ll notice 35 skylights of varying sizes and shapes carved into the outer wall. Originally designed to facilitate the removal of rock debris during construction, these skylights have now become ventilation and lighting features that double as scenic viewpoints. Strolling through the tunnel feels like walking along the flower-patterned windows on the white walls of a Suzhou garden—each step reveals a new view. Many international visitors to Guoliang are amazed by this tunnel carved into the cliffs and have dubbed it the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”
