Bailu Mountain Temple Complex

The Bailu Mountain Temple Complex is a cultural relic protection unit of Henan Province.

The original site of the Bailu Mountain Temple Complex is located among the perilous cliffs and rocky outcrops of Bailu Mountain to the northwest of Yakou Village and Matoukou Village, Shangbali Town, Huixian City. During the period of Shi Le of the Later Zhao, the eminent Indian monk Fotudeng traveled to Bailu Mountain, stayed here, and built two temples—Xuanji and Bailu—by constructing structures along the ridges and carving chambers into the cliffs. During the Tang Dynasty, successively built within cliff niches on the eastern side of Bailu Temple were Fazhu Temple and Xianyang Temple. Within the arc-shaped cliff niches on the southern side of Bailu Mountain, spanning less than 2 kilometers from east to west, four linearly distributed Buddhist temples were formed. Among them, the Thousand Buddha Cave and Statue Cave preserved at Xuanji Temple, the stone inscriptions at Bailu Temple, and the stone pagoda components and carvings at Fazhu Temple and Xianyang Temple are the most representative, forming the core of the Buddhist cultural heritage of Bailu Temple and making it a renowned Buddhist sacred site in the southern Taihang region. In 2008, it was designated as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit by the Henan Provincial Government.
