Huixian Shanxi Guild Hall

The Huixian Shanxi Guild Hall is a cultural relic protection unit of Henan Province.

The Shanxi Guild Hall is situated on the north side of the west end of Nanguan Street in downtown Huixian. Originally a Guan Yu Temple, it functioned as a guild hall established by Shanxi merchants in Huixian. Built in the 25th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1760), it underwent gradual expansions from the 2nd to the 17th year of the Jiaqing reign (1797–1802), eventually forming a fully developed complex. It faces south and follows a central-axis layout. The complex consists of 15 structures and 39 rooms, including the main gate, second gate, theater stage, worship hall, main hall, flanking side halls, side towers, bell and drum towers, and wing rooms. These form a primary courtyard with two courtyards, along with left and right auxiliary courtyards, covering a total area of 2,706 square meters. The main gate and second gate feature a hanging gable roof, the grand worship hall has a connected structure with a rolled shed roof and a hanging gable roof, the bell and drum towers have rolled shed roofs, while the rest of the buildings feature flush gable roofs. A pair of stone lions from the 5th year of the Jiaqing reign (1780) are considered the treasures of the hall. The wood carvings on the theater stage, the brick carvings and stone carvings on the bell and drum towers, along with painted patterns, depict vivid scenes of historical stories and lifelike images of animals, plants, and floral designs—masterpieces of the guild hall’s architectural carving and painting artistry. This well-preserved, complete, and systematically arranged guild hall complex stands as the only physical evidence for studying the activities of Shanxi merchants in Huixian during the early Qing period. In 2001, the Henan Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau included it in the list of candidates for National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
