Site of Zhulin Temple

The site of Zhulin Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

The site of Zhulin Temple is located on Qingyuan Mountain, north of Shuiyukou Village, Dongcheng Town, Yangyuan County. The entire complex faces south. The temple was demolished in 1970, and currently only part of the ground-level buildings and the building foundations remain. Existing structures include the mountain gate, east and west corner gates, the passing hall, the eastern abbot’s quarters, the eastern accounting room, the Fire Spirit Chariot Palace, the Yuewang Hall, the Yaowang Hall, the Dajingzhi Hall, the Three Holy Mothers Hall, the Guan Di Hall, the Erlang Hall, the Sakyamuni Hall, the Eighteen Arhats Hall, the Three Palaces Hall, the Tai Shan Holy Mother Hall, the Fire God Hall, the Horse King Hall, the Ox King Hall, and the Rear Slope Gate. The building foundations include those of the Guan Shengdi Temple, the Five Sacred Mountains Emperor Hall, the Lüzu Hall, the God of Wealth Hall, the Dragon King Hall, and the Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva Hall. According to the Yangyuan County Annals, the temple was first built in the fourth year of the Wanli reign during the Ming Dynasty (1576), and was a temple integrating Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. The ground-level halls were all arched vault-style beamless chambers, while the second level featured brick-and-timber structures, most with flush-gable roofs, and a few with hip-and-gable or pavilion-style roofs. It was once one of the most influential religious buildings in Yangyuan County. The site of Zhulin Temple is now a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

Shuiyukou Village: The registered population of Shuiyukou Village consists of 348 households and 983 people, of which 9 households and 21 people are long-term migrants (absent for more than a year). The village has a total cultivated land area of 3,453 mu, including 2,000 mu of irrigated land, 0 mu of land returned to forest, and 1,453 mu planted with miscellaneous grains and beans. In 2018, the per capita net income of the village was 12,110 yuan.

Villagers in Shuiyukou mainly engage in farming, animal husbandry, and scrap leather processing. The main crops are corn, millet, and miscellaneous beans, while the primary livestock are sheep and pigs.
