Nanzhao Wuduo Mountain Scenic Area

Nanzhao Wuduo Mountain Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Wuduo Mountain is located at the southeastern foot of the Funiu Mountains in the southwestern part of Nanzhao County, Nanyang City, 38 kilometers from Nanzhao County town and 80 kilometers from downtown Nanyang. It is accessible via National Highway 207 and then the scenic area's tourist road. It is a mountainous scenic tourism area that integrates Taoist culture, sightseeing, and leisure vacation. The scenic area covers an area of more than 100 square kilometers, featuring a unique geological structure, complex landforms, and the Beida River and Pailu River extending upward in a "V" shape. The main peak has an elevation of 1,715 meters, with majestic mountains and overlapping peaks. Within a three-kilometer stretch along the north-south line, five prominent and abruptly rising mountain peaks stand tall, forming a powerful and grand presence known as the Five Peaks.

The Wuduo Mountain Scenic Area has a northern subtropical continental monsoon climate, with abundant sunlight, plentiful rainfall, warmth, humidity, and distinct seasons. The area is lush with forests, cool and pleasant, with forest and vegetation coverage exceeding 90%. It is home to 110 families and 850 species of woody and herbaceous plants, including kiwi, yam, cornus, wild rosehip, hedgehog hydnum, monkey head mushroom, sumac lacquer, and Atractylodes. There are also over 300 types of valuable medicinal herbs such as musk and golden hairpin lily, and more than 600 species of animals including leopards, deer, wild boars, wild goats, squirrels, hedgehogs, wolves, badgers, and mountain rabbits. It is an excellent destination for visitors to get close to nature and enjoy eco-tourism.

The scenic area boasts lush forests, beautiful waters, peculiar rocks, and is also a sacred site of Taoism with profound cultural heritage. It combines both natural and cultural landscapes, embracing the majestic beauty of the north and the delicate charm of the south. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, worshiping at the "Northern Peak" has become an important ritual activity in the Central Plains and Jianghan regions, earning it the reputation of the "Sacred Land of the Northern Peak, Little Huashan of the Central Plains."

Currently, three major touring areas have been opened to the public: the Golden Summit, Wanfu Palace, and Baopu Gorge, featuring over 120 scenic spots. Major attractions include the Golden Summit, Sky Ladder, Baopu Waterfall, Wanfu Palace, Mandarin Duck Stream, and Immortal Bridge. The Golden Summit is surrounded by towering cliffs. Standing atop it, visitors can overlook the Bell and Drum Tower Peaks, the Great Peak, and the strange rock formations, feeling as if they are in a fairyland. The stone stairway path of over four thousand steps resembles a ladder to the heavens.

Baopu Gorge is located in the valley of the Beida River. The gorge features cascading waterfalls, connected pools, murmuring streams, serene green pools, uniquely shaped rock cliffs, abrupt giant rocks, hanging cliffs, man-made lakes, waterfalls, deep pools, dense forests, lush bamboo, blooming mountain flowers, and rare birds and animals—each offering distinctive and stunning natural landscapes. The main attraction, Baopu Waterfall, has a drop of nearly 100 meters, twisting and turning as it plunges down with a thunderous roar. Legend says it is the waterfall where the true martial ancestor, Emperor Jianwen Zhu Yunwen of the Ming Dynasty, purified the “violent qi” within his body, hence it is revered as the “Baopu Waterfall.”

This area has long been a sacred site of Taoism with profound cultural heritage and rich historical traditions. Both folk Taoist priests and believers flock here to pay homage. The ancestral temple of Wuduo Mountain was built during the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty (1403–1425) and flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Legend has it that after the Jingnan Incident, the second Ming emperor, Jianwen Emperor Zhu Yunwen, retreated to Wuduo Mountain to build temples and practice Taoism. He is revered by the people as the “Ancestral Master” and was honored by the emperor as the “True Martial Emperor.” Since then, the mountain has been called the “Northern Peak,” also known as the “Ancestral Master Peak” or “Golden Summit,” mirroring the Southern Peak of Wudang Mountain. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, many devout followers from the Central Plains, as well as from Hubei, Guangdong, Fujian, and Zhejiang, have traveled great distances to worship here. Worshiping at the Northern Peak became an important ritual activity in the Central Plains and Jianghan regions, ushering in the golden age of Wuduo Mountain’s temples.

Wanfu Palace is situated in the valley on the mountainside below Shengduo. It includes several temple complexes such as the Jade Emperor Hall, Medicine King Hall, Wenchang Hall, God of Wealth Hall, and Earth Temple, all grand in scale and majestic in presence. Among them, the Medicine King Hall, also known as Qianjin Pavilion, houses not only the famous Tang Dynasty medicine sage Sun Simiao but also other legendary doctors throughout history such as Shennong, Bian Que, Hua Tuo, Zhang Zhongjing, and Li Shizhen—making it truly unique. Since its development, the Wuduo Mountain Scenic Area has continuously improved its reception and service facilities. In addition to a fully functional visitor center, the area also offers supporting amenities such as tourist hotels, resorts, holiday villas, and rustic-style farmhouse services, capable of accommodating approximately 1,500 visitors per day.
