Liangmatai Neolithic Site

The Liangmatai Neolithic Site is a cultural heritage protection unit of Nanzhao County.

The Liangmatai site is located on a highland to the west of Liangmatai Natural Village, Xiaguanzhuang Village, Liushan Town.

This site is among the first batch of county-level cultural heritage protection units announced by Nanzhao County in March 1980.

The site is situated on a riverside highland east of the Liushui River. It measures 160 meters in length from north to south and 105 meters from east to west, with a total area of about 20,000 square meters. The cultural layer is about 1–3 meters thick and is rich in content, with red and gray pottery shards each accounting for around 50%, along with a small amount of painted pottery. Unearthed artifacts include white-bodied black-painted pottery shards, red pottery bowl rims, red-bodied black-painted pottery shards, sandy gray pottery ding vessel rims, duck-billed ding feet, gray pottery dou stems, and polished stone axes. It is a site dating to the middle and late periods of the Yangshao Culture and the early period of the Longshan Culture of the Neolithic Age.

Liushan Town: Located at the southern foot of the Funiu Mountains, Liushan Town lies 13 kilometers east of Nanzhao County. It borders Lushan County to the north, neighbors Cuizhuang Township and Chengjiao Township to the west, connects with Taishanmiao Township to the south, and links to Xiaodian Township to the east. The town administers 21 administrative villages and 246 villager groups, with a total population of 31,903, predominantly Han Chinese. Minority ethnic groups mainly include the Hui, Manchu, and Tibetan peoples.

The town features many low mountains and hills, with the overall terrain sloping from north to south in a narrow, elongated distribution.
