Panzhai Neolithic Site

The Panzhai Neolithic Site is a cultural heritage protection unit of Nanzhao County.

The Panzhai Site is located on the northern side of Panzhai Natural Village in Liushan Town.

This site was among the first batch of county-level cultural heritage protection units announced by Nanzhao County in March 1980.

The site borders Panzhai Village to the south, lies against the Liushan River to the west, stretches 130 meters from north to south and 200 meters from east to west, covering a total area of 26,000 square meters. The cultural layer is 1–3.5 meters thick. Most of the surface-collected artifacts are sandy gray pottery shards, accounting for about 90%, with red pottery making up about 10%. The decorative patterns mainly include basket weave, checkerboard, and appliqué. Sandy ware was mainly hand-made, while others were wheel-thrown. Unearthed items include conical tripod feet, black pottery bean handles, red pottery cups, hand-made basket-weave li (a type of ancient cooking vessel) rims, checkerboard-patterned ding (a type of ancient cauldron) rims, small-mouthed large-bellied urns, stone axes, and more. It is a site dating to the middle and late Longshan Culture period.

Liushan Town: Liushan Town is situated at the southern foot of the Funiu Mountains, 13 kilometers east of Nanzhao County. It borders Lushan County to the north, neighbors Cuizhuang Township and Chengjiao Township to the west, connects with Taishanmiao Township to the south, and links with Xiaodian Township to the east. The town administers 21 administrative villages and 246 villager groups, with a total population of 31,903, predominantly Han Chinese. Ethnic minorities mainly include Hui, Manchu, and Tibetan.

The town features mostly low mountains and hills, with the overall terrain being higher in the north and lower in the south, forming a narrow elongated distribution.
