Gushi Egret Garden

The Egret Garden is located in the state-owned Yangdian Forest Farm, Huzupu Town, Gushi County, Xinyang City, Henan Province. It lies 25 kilometers west of the county seat and is accessible via National Highway 312 or Xinyang-Ye Road. This nature reserve combines leisure, vacation, and science education. It features forested areas spanning 4 square kilometers and water bodies covering 0.7 square kilometers, with a forest coverage rate of 93%. There are over 80 families and 1,073 species of wetland plants, along with 12 types of woody wetland vegetation. The area is home to 13 species of mammals, including 7 from the Palearctic realm, and 19 species of amphibians and reptiles. A total of 128 bird species have been identified, accounting for 43% of Henan’s and 12% of China’s avifauna. It is a rare habitat and breeding ground for waterfowl on the inland plains south of the Huai River in China. The site is dominated by egrets — particularly the nationally protected second-class animal, the little egret — with over 30,000 birds of the heron family. Forty-five species of animals and two species of plants under national key protection are also found here.

Huzupu Town: A township under the jurisdiction of Gushi County. Established as Huzu District in 1949, it became Huzupu Township in 1956, was renamed Yuejin Commune in 1958, then Huzu Commune in 1959, and reverted to Huzupu Township in 1983. Located in the western part of the county, it is 20 kilometers from the county seat. Covering an area of 184 square kilometers, it has a population of 63,000. National Highway 312 passes through the town.
