Suicide Platform

The Suicide Platform is located at the eastern end of the Great Mountain Grandma Temple and above the Pujie Temple. It consists of two massive rocks, each about five to six zhang wide (approximately 16–20 meters) and over ten zhang high (approximately 33–33 meters), extending southward. The back of these rocks connects to the mountain peak, while the front faces a deep valley. Between the two rocks lies a crack about two zhang wide (approximately 6–7 meters), which looks as if it were cleaved by a knife or axe—extremely steep. Beneath the rocks lies an area of lawn covering about a hundred acres (originally the site of Pujie Temple).

Legend has it that this rock is highly spiritual and serves as a touchstone to test a person’s conscience. One could light a stick of incense, climb up to the Suicide Platform, and jump off. If one had a good heart, the deities would naturally protect them and ensure their safety. However, if one had ill intentions, jumping from the Suicide Platform would result in their body being shattered. It is said that during the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty, a filial woman, unable to bear the false rumors spread by the villain Zhao Wu and his servants that she was unchaste, swore an oath and jumped off the cliff to prove her innocence. As a result, she survived the fall without a scratch. This act cleared all doubts among her relatives, friends, and neighbors, and the filial woman’s good name has been passed down to this day, while the villain Zhao Wu was eventually struck dead by lightning. Hence, it came to be known as the “Suicide Platform.”
