Site of the Former Civilian Night School

Category: Tourist Attractions 👁 100 views
The site of the Former Civilian Night School is located in Liuzhuang Village, Suixian County. It was founded in 1929 by Jiang Langshan, a member of the Communist Party of China. The school site originally had three rows of classrooms, east and west wing rooms, a kitchen, and a tea room, among other facilities. Currently, three rows of classrooms remain: the front row has nine rooms, while the middle and back rows each have seven. The central lintel of the middle row features a brick carving inscribed with the four characters “唤起民众” (“Awaken the People”), and the central lintel of the back row bears a brick carving with the characters “革命精神” (“Revolutionary Spirit”) — although the strokes are partially damaged, the remnants are still visible. Jiang Langshan, a native of Suixian County, joined the Communist Party of China in 1923 at Shanghai University, introduced by Cai Hesen and Yun Daiying. After the “April 12 Incident” in 1927, he returned to Liuzhuang Village in Suixian County to organize a peasant association. Under the guise of teaching, he founded the “Fourth Primary School of Suixian County” and established the “Civilian Night School” there from September 1929 to June 1931. The school primarily promoted revolutionary ideals and advocated slogans such as “equal distribution of land rights” and “land to the tiller.” The night school operated in two sessions and trained around 100 students. It was shut down after Jiang was arrested in 1931. In early 1937, after his release from prison, Jiang Langshan returned to Suixian County to take charge of the Party’s leadership work and organized armed forces. These forces were later incorporated into the Third Detachment and joined the Fourth Division of the New Fourth Army under the command of Peng Xuefeng.
