Tomb Murals in Shiyuan

The Tomb Murals in Shiyuan is a cultural tourism attraction.

This tomb is located on a hill to the east of Bao'an Mountain, about 300 meters northwest of the Tomb of Liang Xiaowang. It is the burial site of Liu Mai, the son of Liang Xiaowang Liu Wu. The most precious feature of this tomb is the mural of the Four Symbols painted on the ceiling of the front hall of the main chamber. The mural spans 3.27 meters from east to west and 5.14 meters from north to south, covering an area of 16.8 square meters. It is composed of the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, divine beasts, ganoderma, and cloud patterns. This painting is grand in scale, tightly composed, vivid in theme, and executed flawlessly, as if completed in one continuous stroke. Upon its discovery, it stunned experts and scholars in archaeology, history, architecture, fine arts, and art circles across the nation, who praised it highly. Its artistic value is considered a rare national treasure, predating the Dunhuang murals by over 630 years. It has been hailed as the “Dunhuang before Dunhuang” and the “Dunhuang beyond Dunhuang.”
