The Tomb of King Liu Gong of Liang at Mangdang Mountain

The most exquisite tomb in Bao'an Mountain Scenic Area is the Tomb of King Liu Gong of Liang. It was discovered in 1986, excavated in 1987, and completed in 1991, and was rated as one of the "Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries in China in 1991." As a large cliff tomb, it faces west and was carved manually into hard rock. The entire underground palace consists of the tomb passage, corridor, main chamber, side chambers, passageways, and drainage system, stretching over 70 meters in length with a total area of 383 square meters. According to expert research, the tomb's owner was Liu Mai, King Liu Gong of Liang, the eldest son of King Liu Wu of Liang. It has been over 2,100 years since his time. Liu Mai, the eldest son of King Liu Wu of Liang, succeeded him as the King of Liang and is historically known as King Liu Gong of Liang. This underground palace yielded a national treasure-level cultural relic that caused a sensation in the fields of archaeology and fine arts—the colored mural "Four Spirits and Clouds." The mural features the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, and Vermilion Bird as the central motifs, adorned with swirling clouds and decorative ribbons that pierce through the wall. Despite being over two thousand years old, the colors remain vibrant. Experts and scholars have praised it as the "Dunhuang Before Dunhuang" and the "Dunhuang Beyond Dunhuang." Although this tomb has suffered multiple lootings, a coin hoard was miraculously preserved beneath the blocking stones in the tomb passage. It contained 2.25 million Han Dynasty "ban liang" copper coins, weighing 5.5 tons. Over 10,000 gilded chariot and horse ornaments were also unearthed, along with more than 40 cavalry and maid figurines. These findings provide valuable materials for the study of Han culture.
