The Ancient City of Chang’an

The Ancient City of Chang’an is located in Lijiagucheng Village, Wangjiazhuang Subdistrict. The ancient city site measures 400 meters in length and 200 meters in width, covering a total area of 80,000 square meters. Today, a section of rammed-earth wall ruins about 500 meters long and 3–4 meters high still remains behind Lijiagucheng Village. Han Dynasty bricks and tiles, wuzhu coins, arrowheads, and other artifacts are often found within the village. There are also ancient tombs on the earthen ridge to the northwest of the village, said to be the burial site of Deng Xi, the Marquis of Chang’an, and his son.

The Chang’an County was established during the Western Han Dynasty and was part of the Gaomi Kingdom. In the early Eastern Han Dynasty, it became the fief of Deng Yu, the Marquis of Gaomi. In the first year of the Yongping era of Emperor Ming (58 AD), Deng Yu’s second son inherited the title of Marquis of Chang’an, and his grandson Fan later inherited the marquisate. Thereafter, Chang’an served as the seat of the county government multiple times. In the second year of the Daye era of the Sui Dynasty (606), it was merged into Anqiu County. In the second year of the Wude era of the Tang Dynasty (619), Chang’an County was re-established. In the sixth year of the Wude era (623), it was again merged into Anqiu County. In the second year of the Qianyuan era of the Tang Dynasty (759), the seat of Anqiu County was moved to Chang’an City, and the county was renamed Futang County. In the fourth year of the Kaibao era of the Song Dynasty (971), Anqiu County was re-established and its seat was moved to the present-day county town, after which the Chang’an City was abolished. As a county seat, Chang’an City functioned for over 800 years.

Wangjiazhuang Subdistrict: Located on the western shore of Shandong Province’s largest reservoir—Xiaoshan Reservoir, Wangjiazhuang Subdistrict has 90,000 mu of arable land. In 2011, the subdistrict achieved a total fiscal revenue of 18.703 million yuan and an average rural per capita income of 6,549 yuan. It is recognized as a Beautiful Countryside in Shandong Province, a Model Town for Small Town Construction in Weifang, a Civilized Town in Weifang, a Green Demonstration Town in Weifang, one of Weifang’s Top Ten Charming Towns, a Characteristic Industry Town in Weifang, and a Top Ten Characteristic Agriculture Town in Weifang.
