Shuangwangcheng Salt Industry Site Complex

The Shuangwangcheng Salt Industry Site Complex is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Shuangwangcheng Salt Industry Site Complex is located around the Shuangwangcheng Reservoir in the northern part of Shouguang City, Shandong Province, covering an area of 30 square kilometers. Since the discovery of salt-making sites in the summer of 2003, archaeological experts have conducted multiple field surveys on the scale, distribution, number of sites, and time periods of the Shuangwangcheng Salt Industry Site Complex. Starting in April 2008, planned excavations were carried out at the site, uncovering several relatively well-preserved important relics related to salt production from the Shang and Zhou dynasties. Through archaeological digs, over 30 ancient salt industry relics from the Shang and Zhou periods were discovered, along with two salt workshops dating back to the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties and dozens of helmet-shaped salt-making tools. Additionally, multiple brine pits, evaporation ponds, water storage pits, and two large-scale salt-boiling stoves were excavated.

The Shuangwangcheng Salt Industry Site Complex provides extremely valuable information for the study of ancient Chinese salt production. It is currently the largest salt industry site complex found in coastal areas; the earliest known sea salt production site in China; and also a state-controlled (officially operated) salt production base, predating by several centuries the documented state-run salt industry system of the Qi State during the Eastern Zhou period.

In May 2013, it was designated and announced by the State Council as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Yangkou Town: [Overview] Located in the northeastern part of Shouguang City, on the western side of Laizhou Bay, and on the southern bank of the Xiaqing River estuary, it is 48 kilometers from downtown Shouguang. It borders Laizhou Bay to the east, the Shuangwangcheng Ecological Economic Zone to the west, Yingli Town to the south, and Dongying City to the north. The town government is situated in the Yangkou Town area on the southern bank of the Xiaqing River. The jurisdiction spans a maximum east-west distance of 32.40 kilometers and a maximum north-south distance of 25.08 kilometers, with a total area of 310.72 square kilometers, including 223.86 square kilometers of land and 86.86 square kilometers of water area.
