The Daying Mountain Victory Breakout Memorial Hall
The Daying Mountain Victory Breakout Memorial Hall is a national AAA-level tourist attraction, a Shandong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.
In November 1941, the Japanese invaders assembled the main forces of their Tenth Army, three mixed brigades of the Twenty-Second Division, and over 53,000 puppet troops. Under the supervision of General Itagaki Seishiro, Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese Invasion Forces in China stationed in Linyi, and commanded by Lieutenant General Hashimoto, Commander of the Japanese Shandong District, they launched a large-scale "mopping-up" operation of the "iron wall encirclement" style against the Yimeng Anti-Japanese Base Area.
On November 29, 1941, the First Branch of the Counter-Japanese Military and Political University (Daiichi Branch) relocated to Hujiazhuang and Dagutai on the western side of Daying Mountain in Feidong County (now part of Xuezhuang Town, Feixian County). That day, the 115th Division and the Shandong Column launched the Lvyunshan Battle. To avoid losses, rear offices such as the CCP Shandong Committee, the Shandong War Work Committee, the 115th Division of the Eighth Route Army, and the Shandong Column also successively moved to the Daying Mountain area. Upon learning this intelligence, the enemy immediately mobilized heavy forces and encircled Daying Mountain with one mixed brigade. At that time, most of the personnel trapped within the enemy encirclement were non-combatants, equipped with few and poor-quality weapons. Only the Fifth Battalion of the First Branch of the Counter-Japanese Military and Political University was a student unit armed with weapons. Under the command of Zhou Chunquan, Principal of the First Branch of the Counter-Japanese Military and Political University, they first seized the high ground to block the enemy and cover the breakout of the leadership organs and unarmed personnel.
During the breakout, we suffered heavy losses. Chen Ming, Deputy Director and Secretary-General of the Shandong War Work Committee, Hans Shippe, an international friend, Wang Liren, head of the Enemy Work Department of the 115th Division, Liu Huaidong, political commissar of the Second Battalion of the First Branch of the Counter-Japanese Military and Political University, Liu Tao, political commissar of the Mengshan Detachment, and nearly a thousand others died heroically.
On November 30, 1997, the Linyi Municipal Committee and Municipal Government of the CCP, along with the Feixian County Committee and County Government of the CCP, erected the "Daying Mountain Victory Breakout Monument" on the northwest side of Daying Mountain, east of the highway in Lixingou (Xuezhuang Town, Feixian County), and built a monument pavilion. The monument stands 1.941 meters tall. Its front bears the inscription "Monument to the Victory Breakout at Daying Mountain", while the reverse side records the details of the battle, allowing visitors to pay their respects and reflect.
The Daying Mountain Victory Breakout Memorial Hall is located 11 kilometers north of the seat of Xuezhuang Town, Feixian County. It consists of a victory breakout memorial pavilion, an entrance square, a plaza, the monument, the memorial hall, a martyrs' cemetery area, and a comprehensive lecture hall.
The memorial hall centers around the themes of ideal and conviction, and deep bond between the military and civilians. With the Daying Mountain breakout battle as the main narrative thread, it is divided into sections including “The Flames of Anti-Japanese War Sweep Across Yimeng”, “Bloody Battles on Daying Mountain – A Triumphant Breakout”, “Mountains and Rivers of Mengshan Remember Outstanding Merits”, “Military and Civilians United as One”, and “Firm Convictions Forging Ahead”. It comprehensively showcases the tragic and heroic scenes of the Shandong Party, government, military, and civilians fighting bravely and killing enemies during the Daying Mountain breakout. The memorial hall primarily uses historical photos and physical artifacts, supplemented by landscapes, oil paintings, sculptures, and multimedia displays, highlighting the revolutionary heroism and patriotism of the martyrs who prioritized the greater good, stood united against the enemy, feared no sacrifice, and dared to achieve victory.
