Zhoucun Crispy Cake Museum

The Zhoucun Crispy Cake Museum is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

The Zhoucun Crispy Cake Museum is located on the east side of the southern section of Dajie. Its entrance is adorned with bright red lanterns and a gleaming golden plaque, flanked by signs reading “China Time-Honored Brand” and “National Intangible Cultural Heritage.” Stepping through the museum’s gate, visitors are greeted by classic Chinese architecture, old photographs rich in historical weight, preserved stone mills, and more.

Displayed in the lobby, the “Ode to Crispy Cakes,” spanning several thousand words, details the characteristics, reputation, and century-long legacy and development of Zhoucun Crispy Cakes.

The large crispy cakes of Zhoucun originated in the Han Dynasty, took shape in the late Qing Dynasty, and were innovatively refined by the “Hejiazhai” Crispy Cake workshop. After a century of inheritance, Shandong Zhoucun Crispy Cake Co., Ltd. took on the historical mission of continuing and advancing its legacy. Sixty years ago, the company registered the “Zhoucun” brand trademark for the large crispy cake. A century of history and cultural heritage, combined with the continuous innovation and drive of Shandong Zhoucun Crispy Cake Co., Ltd., has laid a solid foundation for the “Zhoucun Crispy Cake” brand.

As the dust of history settled, many stories were sealed away in memory—until 2011, when the opening of the Zhoucun Crispy Cake Museum in the Zhoucun Ancient Commercial City brought those memories back to life. The museum showcases the historical charm of the birthplace of Shandong merchants and presents, through live demonstrations, the craft of making Zhoucun Crispy Cakes, which has been approved by the State Council as part of the “National Intangible Cultural Heritage” and is also hailed as a “living intangible cultural heritage.” This extends the history of the ancient Zhoucun trading port right here.

The design of the Zhoucun Crispy Cake Museum also pays special attention to emotional impact. Next to the escalator leading from the first floor to the basement, there is a huge “Wall of Smiles,” featuring photos of people of all ages biting into the thin, crispy, and fragrant Zhoucun Crispy Cakes with joyful expressions. The entire image radiates happiness and instantly moves visitors. In the basement, the “living” display perfectly showcases the magical craftsmanship of making Zhoucun Crispy Cakes. Visitors can not only watch the cake masters at work but also try their hand at making them. Kneading the dough, stretching it, sprinkling sesame seeds, and pressing the cakes onto the oven—all these movements appear light, fluid, and seamless, with perfect coordination of hands, eyes, body, and footwork. The technicians’ skilled and graceful motions resemble those of dancers. Yet, while it looks easy, trying it yourself reveals the truth behind the old saying: “Watching someone carry a load looks effortless, but when you take it on, your mouth twists in strain.”

The century-old large crispy cake, thanks to the Zhoucun Crispy Cake Museum, offers people a complete recollection, a deep experience, and overwhelming emotion—about the fragrance of earth, the generosity of the land, the joy of nature, and the dance of life. As time stretches endlessly, it will become an indelible color and flavor in life. Visit the Zhoucun Crispy Cake Museum and gain a deeply moving experience from the depths of your soul.
