Ten Thousand Lions Museum

The HuanTai Ten Thousand Lions Museum is a hall dedicated to showcasing China’s ancient lion sculpture art. It embodies the wisdom of laboring people throughout the ages and presents a historical tapestry of stone lion carving art. It is currently the only stone lion museum in the country.

As an artistic image, lions are widely seen in various architectural decorations across China, and the history of their carving art is long and profound, with sculptural art that is incredibly lifelike and comes in a myriad of forms. The craftsmanship is masterful, with smooth and flowing lines that offer viewers a delightful aesthetic experience.

The museum displays over a thousand pieces of stone lion sculpture artworks and hundreds of precious images. Many of these pieces hold significant historical and cultural value as well as strong artistic appeal. In terms of time period, they include works from the Han, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, Song, Jin, Liao, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties; by material, there are stone, pottery, porcelain, wood, bamboo, bronze, iron, and white marble lions; by style, some lions crouch in poised readiness, while others stand firm as rocks; some are endearingly cute, others fiercely imposing; larger ones exude majesty and power, smaller ones are lively and adorable; male lions standing on embroidered balls signify luck and prosperity, while those playing with cub lions symbolize the continuation of offspring. Geographically, southern lions are spirited and lively with a grand appearance, while northern lions feature simple carvings, appearing solemn and dignified. The HuanTai Ten Thousand Lions Museum is a cultural art exhibition institution approved by the Zibo Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics and is one of the important tourist attractions in Zibo.
