Bixia Lake

Bixia Lake is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Originally named Yang'an Town Reservoir, Bixia Lake was renamed by the municipal Party committee and government to boost local tourism and enrich cultural heritage. In 2008, following the principle of “building one project, creating one scenic view, protecting one ecological area, and beautifying one environment,” the reservoir area underwent high-standard development. A 600-acre park was constructed outside the western dam of Bixia Lake with an investment of 40 million yuan, forming a large-scale infrastructure project integrating public water supply, ecological protection, leisure entertainment, and sightseeing tourism.

Scenic features of Bixia Lake Park include: an entrance plaza, fountains, a fishing garden, a Five-Dragon Pillar sculpture, rockeries, a lotus pond, an open-air venue, and the Bixia Book House, among others. These are complemented by embellishments such as cherry blossoms, roses, rugosa roses, honeysuckle, goji berries, purple-leaf plum trees, scholar trees, holly, and black pines.

1. White Marble Five-Dragon Pillar: Standing 25 meters tall, the pillar’s base features three relief carvings depicting Laozi giving a lecture, Li Bing and his son constructing the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, and Yu the Great taming the nine rivers. The back side displays the “Bixia Lake Construction Chronicle.”

2. Lotus Pond: To the left of the Five-Dragon Pillar lies a lotus pond with large, round lotus leaves and red-and-white lotus flowers. Aside from being a scenic spot, the pond yields nearly 500 kilograms of lotus roots annually, providing additional income.

3. Bixia Book House: A space where culture and landscape enhance each other, evoking the ambiance of Bixia’s former residence and homeland.

4. Open-Air Venue: Covering 40 acres, it is equipped with recreational facilities such as roller slides and pedal-powered water balls. The sandy area includes sun umbrellas and wooden lounge chairs for visitors to rest. The sand beneath is river sand, and volleyball courts formed by netting allow guests to play. The open-air venue embodies the concept of “being close to water and scenery without polluting the source.”

In October 2009, Bixia Lake was awarded the title of “National AAA-Level Tourist Attraction”; in 2010, it was designated as the seventh Shandong Provincial Water Conservancy Scenic Area.
