The South Heaven Temple was built on a ring-shaped mountainside on the northern side of Yun Cui Mountain. It was established here because Qiu Chuji (also known as Changchun), the founder of the Quanzhen School of Taoism, once stayed in this area, and his disciples constructed the temple, naming it the South Heaven Temple. It was founded in the fourth year of the Zhi Da era during the Yuan Dynasty (1311 AD), when it was one of the four famous temples (Beijing’s White Cloud Temple, Jinan’s Changchun Temple, Zoucheng’s Yishan Evergreen Temple, and Hongfan’s South Heaven Temple). It was renovated during the Longqing era of the Ming Dynasty, and its main structures included the Jade Emperor Pavilion, Penglai Immortal Courtyard, Pengxu Pavilion, Changchun Pavilion, Zhenwu Temple, Sanzhen Temple, theater stage, and viewing stands, making it quite large in scale. The temple grounds feature numerous stone tablets and deep caves. To the east lies the Taoist Cemetery, where past Taoist masters are buried.
