Dazhai Mountain

Dazhai Mountain is located southeast of Hongfan Pond Town, with an elevation of 494.8 meters, making it the highest peak in Pingyin County. During the Xianfeng era of the Qing Dynasty, local residents built houses and fortified the area on the mountain to escape war, hence the name. Stone chambers and the gate of the old fortification still remain. The mountain was historically known as Daxijian, and because the Langxi River originates here, it is also called "Wolf Mountain." Legend has it that in ancient times, when floods were rampant and the land was submerged, only this mountain stood above the waters, so it was also called "Floating Mountain."

The mountain features overlapping ridges and ranges, standing like a screen, creating an exceptionally majestic sight. The forested slopes are lush with trees and thick with undergrowth, making paths hard to discern. The mountain is scattered with rugged rocks and towering boulders. At the summit, two peaks stand opposite each other from north to south, forming sheer cliffs as if cut by a knife, connected by a stone ridge known as the "Heavenly Gate View." The northern peak offers numerous scenic spots, such as the "Heavenly Milk Spring," "Queen Mother’s Platform," "Brocade Screen Rock," and "Wind-Through Cliff," among which the Wind-Through Cliff and Brocade Screen Rock are particularly spectacular. The Wind-Through Cliff features two towering cliffs about 10 meters high with a gap of over one meter between them. From one side, only a sliver of blue sky can be seen. When the mountain wind blows through, it makes a howling sound like a tiger’s roar, chilling those who hear it. On rainy or cloudy days, clouds drift through the gap, resembling surging waves. The Brocade Screen Rock, also called the Dripping Water Cliff, is a flat, expansive rock face with clear spring water cascading down, sparkling brilliantly in the sunlight. The southern peak is characterized by steep and perilous cliffs. One section of the rocky path leading to the summit is about 50 meters long, with a width of just over 2 meters at the top and deep valleys on both sides—so deep that the bottom is not visible when looking down. Walking along this path is nerve-wracking and is considered the most dangerous part of climbing Dazhai Mountain. Legend says that those with ill intentions find it hard to pass, hence the name "Heart-Touching Bridge." During the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, the literary figure Yu Shenxing crossed this area with great trepidation, sweating coldly, and was immensely relieved afterward. He then inscribed the four large characters “Amitabha Buddha” on the top of the cliff. Despite more than 400 years of weathering, the inscription remains clearly visible. The Heart-Touching Bridge presents strange scenery; on rainy or cloudy days, one side may be shrouded in mist, hiding all views, while the other side remains clear, every blade of grass and tree distinctly visible. Climbing from the Heart-Touching Bridge to the summit, one is greeted with a breathtaking panoramic view. To the southwest, Dongping Lake shines like a bright mirror, glistening silver; the ancient Yellow River resembles a jade ribbon draped among verdant peaks. Looking eastward, rolling mountains stretch into the distance like waves.
