Pingyin Confucius Temple

Pingyin Confucius Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

Pingyin Confucius Temple is located at the southeast corner of the old county town in Pingyin County, Jinan City, and at the western end of Fuxian Street in the new county town. It lies about 1 kilometer east of the county government building and is the only surviving county-level Confucius Temple in the province. Originally built between the Yuanyou and Daguan years of the Northern Song Dynasty (1098–1110), it underwent renovations and expansions during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, eventually forming a grand complex of ancient architecture. Although parts of the temple have collapsed over time, the main structures and gardens have been preserved, maintaining their appearance as a well-arranged architectural ensemble with green-tiled roofs, red walls, upturned eaves, dougong brackets, logical layouts, and solid structures.

The Confucius Temple faces south and covers an area of 1.3 hectares, measuring 198 meters from north to south and 80 meters from east to west. The architectural layout is divided into three sections: along the central axis from south to north are the Lingxing Gate, Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall, and Minglun Hall. On the eastern side are the Zhongyi Shrine, Minghuan Shrine, Wenchang Temple, San Dai Palace, and East Study. On the western side are the Jexiao Shrine and West Study. The entire complex is enclosed by brick floral walls, with a cypress screen wall at the front, a landscaped garden at the back, numerous stone steles standing in rows, and an orderly courtyard arrangement. The main structure, Dacheng Hall, is five bays wide (22 meters) and three bays deep (11 meters), with a height of 11.8 meters. It features a Dougong-style bracket system, double-beam construction, and a hip-and-gable roof with nine ridges, topped with glazed tiles. The front of the hall has six intricately carved octagonal stone pillars adorned with high-relief coiling dragons and cloud motifs, which are exquisitely crafted. Inside, there are eight golden (main) columns and ten clay (partially wall-embedded) columns, all forming a tightly integrated structure. The entire architectural complex is logically laid out, majestic, and spectacular. In 1983, government funding was allocated to renovate Dacheng Hall, restoring it to its original appearance. Despite undergoing multiple restorations over the past thousand years, the Pingyin Confucius Temple still retains the architectural style of the Song Dynasty.

In recent years, culturally significant stone steles and ancient stone carvings such as stone sheep, stone beasts, and stone figures, donated from various parts of the county, have been erected on the eastern and western sides in front of the main hall, adding new depth and meaning to the Confucius Temple.

On the eastern side of the Confucius Temple, two rows of antique-style buildings with gray tiles and white walls have been constructed on the former sites of the city moat and city wall. The Confucius Temple now serves as the centerpiece of this historic architectural area.
