Tai'an Science and Technology Museum
The Tai'an Science and Technology Museum serves as a base for science education.
The Tai'an Science and Technology Museum was first established in 1980, with the first phase of the new building completed and opened in 1996. The exhibition area covers 8,700 square meters. The museum features three permanent exhibition sections: the Taishan Resources Exhibition, Aerospace Knowledge Exhibition, and Popular Science Knowledge Exhibition, with over 200 sets (pieces) of exhibits, combining fun and educational value.
The museum has a staff quota of 24 people, with all 24 currently employed. Among them, there are 4 with senior professional titles and 12 with intermediate titles. The staff is highly qualified, with 95% holding college degrees or higher. The main source of funding is government financial support, supplemented by self-raised funds and social donations. With a focus on strengthening science communication capabilities, building a harmonious society, and supported by effective management systems for personnel, finance, vehicles, exhibition halls, and free admission, the museum continuously enhances operational efficiency, broadens its scope, optimizes the environment for science education, improves effectiveness, and promotes the effective delivery of science exhibitions and education. It remains open to the public free of charge year-round, receiving over 60,000 visitors annually.
As an institution under the Tai'an Association for Science and Technology, it shoulders the important tasks of providing scientific and cultural quality education to young people and promoting science awareness among the general public. It has achieved significant social benefits and has been recognized by the China Association for Science and Technology, the provincial association, and the municipal Party committee and government with titles such as “National Model Site for Science Museum Education and Exhibition,” “Provincial Science Education Base,” “Advanced Unit in Municipal Spiritual Civilization Construction,” and a municipal-level civilized unit. From 2005 to 2007, it was awarded the title of Excellent Organizer for the Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition for three consecutive years, and for two consecutive years as an Outstanding Organizing Unit for the National Olympiad in Informatics in Provinces (Shandong Region).
Science Communication Work:
I. Focusing on the core role of the science museum as a public, scientific, and educational platform, the museum vigorously implements free admission and science education activities. First, using permanent exhibitions as a foundation, it fully utilizes the Taishan Resources Exhibition, Aerospace Exhibition, and Popular Science Knowledge Exhibition to actively organize the public opening of these exhibitions, offering them free of charge to the public year-round. Based on local conditions, it raises funds to periodically update and adjust exhibits, while also regularly improving exhibit layouts and exhibition environments to ensure the exhibitions remain fresh and engaging. Relying on the Shandong Science and Technology Museum, the Tai'an Digital Science and Technology Museum has been established, organizing visits for audiences from selected townships, communities, and schools each year, reaching approximately 60,000 visitors. Second, using the Science Popularization Vehicle as a medium, combined with mobile exhibitions, it brings mobile science museums and science picture exhibitions to counties, districts, townships, communities, enterprises, and schools, holding two large-scale touring exhibitions each year.
II. Enhancing the scientific literacy of minors and extensively carrying out youth science education series. First, actively promoting “Science Museum Enters Campus” and “Science Delivered to Campus” activities. Using the science popularization vehicle equipped with self-made science exhibition boards and model aircraft performance teams, it conducts tours in counties and districts, receiving warm welcomes. Over 600 sets of science equipment have been donated to remote mountainous area schools, earning praise from teachers and students. Second, vigorously implementing science-for-agriculture initiatives, actively carrying out the “Young Talents Plan” for youth and piloting extracurricular youth science activity rooms. Over 100,000 yuan has been invested to establish 15 youth science activity rooms in rural middle schools across six counties and districts, along with the donation of exhibits, science posters, and books. A pilot project for extracurricular youth science activity rooms in counties, funded by the China Association for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education, was also established—one of eight national pilots and the only one in Shandong Province. Third, accelerating the implementation of the museum-school collaboration project. Schools such as Tai'an No. 1 Middle School have been designated as bases for museum-in-school activities, providing students with more convenient access to science education. Fourth, organizing the “Science Popularization Report Tour to 100 Schools.” Experts and academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences are invited to give specialized science lectures at primary and secondary schools in Tai'an, allowing students to engage directly with scientists and boosting their enthusiasm for learning, loving, and applying science.
III. Focusing on enhancing youth innovation capabilities, actively carrying out youth innovation activities. First, hiring renowned science education experts to give lectures and training for science counselors, organizing academic exchanges and theoretical seminars. Second, with a focus on innovation education and using the Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition as a platform, youth science education activities have gradually extended to remote mountainous areas. Youth model aircraft activities have shown remarkable results, achieving excellent results in provincial competitions. Science summer camps, through standardized and institutionalized fun activities, foster students' innovative awareness and improve their overall quality. Third, the Youth Olympiad in Informatics has become more formalized and regular, with increasing enthusiasm among students citywide for learning information technology. The number of participants in the competition has risen yearly, with over 62 students winning awards at the provincial level or above in recent years, and seven students earning exemptions from university entrance exams. For three consecutive years, it has been recognized as an Excellent Organizing Unit for Youth Science and Technology Innovation Education.
Recent Development Plans:
Strengthening the construction of science communication facilities, aiming to build the Tai'an Science and Technology Museum into a flagship project of Tai'an's science and culture infrastructure, based on the management requirements and standards of national and provincial science education bases. First, striving for government approval to establish a new museum according to the unified planning of the municipal Party committee. Second, achieving resource sharing, fully tapping into science education resources, actively building a science communication platform, leveraging social resources, and combining local characteristics with disciplines from local colleges and research institutions to establish specialized science museums; collaborating with meteorological, environmental protection, and earthquake departments to enrich exhibition content, leveraging local advantages, and hosting diverse, timely-themed science exhibitions. Third, seeking support from the China Association for Science and Technology and the provincial association to establish a youth science room incorporating local features, with plans to include youth science studios focused on robotics, Taishan shadow puppetry crafts, and model aircraft making; attempting to establish community-based youth science studios. Fourth, training science counselors citywide, organizing training sessions for information science computer Olympiad, robotics competition, innovation competition, and model aircraft competition counselors in conjunction with youth science events. This aims to enhance counselor capabilities and competition levels, expand competition categories, and cultivate reserve talent for science competitions. Fifth, encouraging more schools to participate in information science computer Olympiad, robotics competition, innovation competition, and model aircraft competition, organizing the citywide Olympiad in Informatics, and striving for 10% of students in the city to participate in these activities within three years.
