Chaoyang Mosque
Chaoyang Mosque is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.
The mosque was built during the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty (1407) and has a history of over 600 years. The complex consists of a main gate, hallway, lecture hall, ablution room, living quarters, and prayer hall, all arranged along a central axis. It features a grand scale, complete layout, and unique architectural style.
The main gate is three-bay wide, built with stone and wood, featuring a traditional Chinese hip-and-gable roof with double eaves, bracket sets, and upturned eaves. It is the most magnificent among mosque gates in the province. Upon entering the gate, visitors see the reception hall and five steles of moral teachings. The east-side reception hall is a two-story building facing west. The main prayer hall is the central structure, supported by three beams and nine rafters, and built in a double-eaved hip-and-gable style with brick and wood. It features colorful paintings and carvings with vivid imagery. The roof ridge is adorned with the twelve zodiac signs and a crescent moon. It serves as a sacred site for Islamic worship, accommodating hundreds of worshippers. The hall is built on a platform 0.8 meters above ground, with a width of three bays and depth of five bays, covering an area of 218.36 square meters. The entire prayer hall consists of a portico, connecting hall, and rear hall. The portico interior features inscribed bricks such as “Monotheism,” “The Great Origin of the Path,” “Unity of All Transformations,” and on the side, “Old Friends of the Kaiyuan Era,” with hard mountain-style walls.
The crescent moon symbol on the roof of the prayer hall represents the newly risen moon. The interior is the worship space where, according to the Five Pillars of Islam, Muslims perform prayers, removing their shoes and bowing toward Mecca on red carpets.
The orientation of mosques is always east-facing. According to Islamic tradition, worshippers must face the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia; in China, this means facing west. Therefore, the entrance of a mosque is usually located on the western side of the street.
Chaoyang Mosque is the best-preserved and largest classical Islamic religious structure in the county, reflecting the cultural and religious characteristics of the Ming and Qing periods. It serves as an important place of worship for the Muslim community in the Chaoyang area. In 1987, it was listed as a municipal-level cultural and historical unit and a cultural relic protection site.
