The Su Village Ambush Battle Memorial Hall is located in the eastern part of Su Village, Zhangzhai Town. In January 1941, over 10,000 Japanese puppet troops launched a major mopping-up operation against the anti-Japanese base area in northwestern Shandong. Yang Yong, Duan Junyi, and others led the headquarters of the Western Shandong Military Region to break out of the enemy encirclement and moved to the Maji area. The Japanese forces followed closely behind. To cover the retreat of the military region's headquarters westward across the Tuhai River, more than 130 soldiers from the 9th and 10th Companies of the 3rd Special Battalion held off over 1,000 Japanese troops for as long as eight hours, killing over 300 Japanese soldiers, while fewer than ten of our own men survived. After the battle, the military region’s headquarters and local residents buried the fallen soldiers together in Su Village. In 2004, the People’s Government of Shen County renovated the martyrs’ cemetery and erected a memorial monument.
