Sanhuai Hall in Shenxian County

Sanhuai Hall is the ancestral temple of Wang Dan, a renowned statesman of the Song Dynasty, located in Taomiao Wangzhuang Village, Shenxian County. Su Dongpo wrote in the "Inscription of Sanhuai Hall": “The achievements of Duke Wei were shaded by the trees just as they were by his virtue. The care invested in nurturing them bore fruit only after generations. Having served as prime minister under Emperor Zhenzong, he brought peace to all directions. Upon returning home, he found his courtyard shaded by flourishing locust trees.” Historical records state that Wang Dan’s father, Wang You, rose to the position of Vice Minister of War. Though he possessed great talent for governance, his career was fraught with setbacks, and his ambitions went largely unfulfilled. He planted three locust trees in the courtyard himself, expressing the wish: “My descendants will surely produce someone who attains the rank of one of the Three Excellencies—this is my aspiration.” Later, his second son, Wang Dan, indeed became a prime minister. Throughout his life, Wang Dan was an upright and incorruptible official—he sought no personal gain, accepted no bribes, acquired no land holdings, kept no entertainers, clearly distinguished loyalty from treachery, was adept at recognizing talent, appointed people based on merit, held himself strictly accountable, and treated others with generosity, thus establishing a lasting family ethos for the Wangs. Many of his descendants entered officialdom through imperial examinations, with as many as 11 of them having biographies recorded in the History of Song—all known for their integrity and individual accomplishments. The Sanhuai branch of the Wang clan has continued for 48 generations since Wang You, with descendants now spread across the country and in some countries and regions of Southeast Asia. In recent years, notable individuals from Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and other places have continuously visited Sanhuai Hall in Shenxian County to trace their roots, renew family genealogies, reflect on the noble virtues of their ancestors, and promote traditional Chinese virtues.
