Wohua Pagoda

Wohua Pagoda is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Wohua Pagoda, located east of Tianta Village, Datianji Town, Chengwu County, was initially built in the early Tang Dynasty and is the oldest existing above-ground ancient structure in southwestern Shandong. In 1997, the Shandong Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau and the Provincial Fine Arts Publishing House included the pagoda in the "Ancient Architecture Pictorial Album." The pagoda is of the pavilion-style, with a square floor plan, and consists of three parts: the finial, the body, and the base. It is entirely built of stone, featuring a simple and dignified design. The top two stories were artificially destroyed in the mid-1960s, leaving five visible stories standing 5.4 meters tall. The ground floor has a tower chamber facing south, about 1.5 meters deep. On the east and west walls of the chamber are carved stone statues—each measuring 90 cm in height, 56 cm in width, and 11 cm in thickness. The east wall features carvings of three Buddha statues and 32 other figures, with the inscription “Offered by Emperor Shengshen Shenwu of the Great Tang’s Kaiyuan Era” on the left and “Offered by the Empress of the Great Tang’s Kaiyuan Era when worshiping the Buddha” on the right. The west wall has carvings of three Buddha statues and 21 other figures. The tallest Buddha statue is 20 cm, and the shortest is 7 cm. There was once a grand temple complex here, which was destroyed in fires during the early 20th century.

On October 7, 2019, Wohua Pagoda was included in the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
