Chengwu County Martyrs' Cemetery is a patriotic education base.

Chengwu County Martyrs' Cemetery was established in 1964 to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs who bravely sacrificed their lives in various wars throughout Chengwu County’s history. It was built on the site of the renowned cultural heritage “Wenting Mountain.” Located one kilometer northwest of the county town, the cemetery is 260 meters long from north to south and 110 meters wide from east to west. Nestling against the mountain terrain and facing south, it covers an area of 28,600 square meters with a building area of 1,280 square meters.

The entire cemetery complex consists of a martyrs’ memorial hall, a memorial square, a memorial monument, and a centralized burial ground. The layout is well-arranged, majestic in presence, surrounded by evergreen pines and cypresses, offering a serene and solemn environment. Currently, the remains of 144 named martyrs and 170 unnamed martyrs are laid to rest here, and the memorial hall displays the names of 1,068 revolutionary martyrs. In 1989, it was designated by the county government as a “County-Level Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit” and a “Revolutionary Tradition Education Center.” In 1998, it was approved by Heze City as a “Patriotic Education Base.” In 2013, it was recognized by the Heze Municipal People's Government as a “Heze Youth Social Practice Education Base,” and in 2014, it was named by the Heze Municipal People's Government as a “Second Batch of Municipal-Level Key Martyrs’ Memorial Facilities Protection Units.”

The grand entrance gate of the cemetery stands towering, with the seven gleaming Chinese characters “成武县烈士陵园” (Chengwu County Martyrs' Cemetery) inscribed on the lintel, written by the famous calligrapher Mr. Bao Biwu. From south to north, the cemetery is sequentially composed of the main gate, administrative office area, martyrs’ memorial hall, martyrs’ deeds exhibition hall, and the martyrs’ burial area.

In recent years, the cemetery has been included as one of the red tourism sites in Chengwu County and incorporated into the urban planning. With high attention from the county Party committee and government, funds have been raised successively to renovate the main gate, perimeter walls, mountain slope protections, and martyrs’ memorial facilities. The “Martyrs’ Comfort Project” has been implemented, along with overall upgrades. To date, a martyrs’ deeds exhibition hall with a construction area of approximately 350 square meters, a martyrs’ memorial hall covering around 700 square meters, landscaping of about 4,000 square meters, a martyrs’ memorial square spanning approximately 1,500 square meters, and mountain-access stairs have been completed. A circular mountain path has been built, and 2,000 square meters of mountain access roads have been paved. This site has evolved beyond being a traditionally solemn sacred land and a place for spiritual purification. It has become a unique urban cultural park that honors the martyrs, inspires future generations, and serves as a deeply meaningful patriotic education base. It also provides the public with a recreational, sightseeing, and leisure destination, becoming a beautiful highlight in the city’s landscape.
