Ruins of the Ancient Chengwu City

The ruins of the ancient Chengwu City refer to a vast area located north of the new Chengwu County urban area and within the old city’s protective embankment. It stretches 3,525 meters from east to west and 1,800 meters from north to south, covering a total area of 6.325 million square meters.

A site of such a large scale has never been found in Heze City before. Investigations and surveys have confirmed that this is the site of the ancient Gao State capital from the Western Zhou period.

The discovery and confirmation of the Gao State ancient city site not only provide new material for urban archaeology and fill a gap in the study of fortified cities in the Heze region during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, but also offer physical evidence for researching the history of the Gao State. It is especially significant for studying the economic history of the Gao State. In June 1992, the site was designated as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the Provincial Level in Shandong Province.
