The Chongren County Revolutionary Martyrs Monument is a classic site of red tourism.
Chongren County Revolutionary Martyrs Monument:
Located 500 meters south of the county town on Nanfu Mountain. Here, lush pines and swaying green cypresses frame the majestic and solemn Chongren Revolutionary Martyrs Monument.
In 1927, the Communist Party of China established its first grassroots party organization in Gutang Village, Hangbu. After the establishment of the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Base, southern Chongren became part of the Central Revolutionary Base, where county, district, and township Soviet people’s governments were set up, and multiple military “encirclement and suppression” campaigns launched by the reactionary Kuomintang were thwarted. Especially during the struggle against the Fourth Encirclement Campaign, the Chongren Independent Regiment and guerrilla forces fought alongside the Red Army and achieved a major victory in the “Dengxianqiao Battle,” earning recognition from the Central Red Army and the Jiangxi Military District of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. After the Red Army marched north to resist Japan, the people of Chongren, under the leadership of the Communist Party, remained indomitable and carried out arduous struggles until the liberation of the entire county on May 10, 1949.
According to records, during the Second Revolutionary War period, 77 martyrs sacrificed their lives in Chongren County, 2 during the Liberation War, 5 in the Korean War, and 11 during the Socialist Revolution and Socialist Construction period. To commemorate these revolutionary heroes and inspire future generations to uphold and carry forward the glorious revolutionary tradition, in 1949, the Chongren County Party Committee and County Government established a Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery here. The Revolutionary Martyrs Monument was built in 1964 and reconstructed in 1990.
The newly built Martyrs Monument covers an area of 2 mu, stands 14.75 meters tall, and is constructed of marble. The front of the monument is inscribed with “Chongren County Martyrs Monument,” while the back bears the words “Eternal Glory to the Revolutionary Martyrs.” On the sides are lines from Mao Zedong’s poetry: “For great sacrifice, our will grows ever stronger” and “We dare to teach the sun and moon to change the sky.” The front of the base features an inscription recounting the arduous revolutionary struggle of the people of Chongren under the leadership of the Communist Party of China from 1927 to 1949. The back records the names of 95 martyrs. To the right of the monument lies the tomb of Liu Jianzhang, the county’s first Party secretary and a martyr, with an inscription on the tombstone by then Jiangxi Provincial Party Secretary Chen Zhengren that reads: “To die for the people is glory enough.”
