The "Master of Neo-Confucianism" Main Gate Archway

The "Master of Neo-Confucianism" Main Gate Archway is a cultural relic protection unit of Chongren County.

The "Master of Neo-Confucianism" Main Gate Archway is located in Zhoufang Village Group, Hanshang Village Committee, Heshang Town. It was built by descendants of Wu Yubi, a Neo-Confucian scholar and educator from the Ming Dynasty, and the structure was erected during the Qing Dynasty.

Wu Yubi, styled Zifu and also known as Kangzhai, was a native of Liantang Xiaobo (also referred to as Heshang Donglai). He was born in 1391 and died in 1469 at the age of 79. Historically, Wu Yubi had a significant impact on Neo-Confucian scholarship and academic influence. He not only founded the "Chongren School" represented by himself, but his student Chen Baisha, guided by the philosophy of "quiet contemplation and self-cultivation," pioneered the "Baisha School," while Hu Juren, inspired by the principle of "dedication and diligent practice," established the "Yugan School." He earned deep respect from his students. In the first year of the Tianshun era of the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Yingzong Zhu Qizhen reinstated the throne and appointed Wu Yubi as "Left Spring Hall Instructor." A notable feature of Wu Yubi’s teaching was his method of "farming and studying," which initiated a new pedagogical trend of his time. The "Master of Neo-Confucianism" Main Gate Archway holds great significance for the study of Wu Yubi’s thought and legacy.
