The former site of the Red Fifth Army’s encampment is a cultural relic protection unit of Chongren County.

The former site of the Red Fifth Army’s encampment is located in Lu Bian Village Group, Shibei Village Committee, Xufang Township. Over 30 Red Army slogans were discovered at this site. The slogans inside the old residential houses were written on three earthen walls of the front western room, in white with black characters—each earthen wall is about 1.2 meters high and 0.6 meters wide; the slogans on the old kitchen were written on the plaster edging outside the kitchen window, in white with black characters, about 0.8 meters high and 0.2 meters wide; most of the slogans inside the old storage building were written on the earthen walls, with a few on wooden panel walls, some in black ink and others in red ink—the earthen walls are about 1.2 meters high and 0.4 meters wide. The slogans include messages such as “Oppose imperialist partition of China ! Smash the enemy’s massive offensive!” “Down with Chiang Kai-shek ! Down with imperialism!” “Eliminate the imperialist Kuomintang’s fourth encirclement and massive offensive ! Wipe out enemy strongholds!” “Six-hour workday for young workers ! Annihilate Chiang’s main forces ! Seize central cities ! Down with the Kuomintang bandits who massacre workers and peasants ! Capture Chiang Kai-shek alive ! March to Fuzhou, Nanchang, and Jiujiang, capture Chiang Kai-shek alive!” “Down with the Kuomintang that betrayed the three northeastern provinces, Rehe, North China, and Beiping ! Down with Kuomintang and Chiang Kai-shek ! Oppose imperialist partition of China ! Down with the Kuomintang bandits!” and more. During the Fourth Counter-Encirclement Campaign, the Red Army launched attacks from here on the north gate of Yihuang County. Most of the slogans found in the warehouse of Old Residential House No. 32 were signed “Red Army / Labor Special / Propaganda” and “Red Army / Labor Political / Propaganda,” leading to the inference that the Red Army unit stationed here was likely not an ordinary combat troop. On the surrounding hills of the village, many trenches and air-raid shelters have also been discovered.
