Wugong Mountain Shigu Temple

Wugong Mountain Shigu Temple is a cultural heritage site protected by Luxi County.

Originally named Shigu An (Stone Drum Hermitage), also known as Fozu An (Buddha’s Hermitage), Shigu Temple is located at the foot of Baihe Peak, the main peak of Wugong Mountain in Pingxiang, 35 kilometers from Luxi County. The original hermitage was built during the Yuan Dynasty's Yanyou era (1314–1320), making it around 700 years old. Renovation began in 2003, and now the site includes a temple gate, bell tower, drum tower, Mahavira Hall, and more, all built on a grand scale with a majestic atmosphere. The temple enshrines statues of Sakyamuni Buddha, Guanyin, and the Eighteen Arhats. The abbot is Venerable Shi Ci Shan, a member of the Buddhist Association of China and a master from Nantai Temple on Mount Nanyue.

Legend has it that when Emperor Qianlong traveled to the south of the Yangtze River, he stayed at Fozu An at the foot of Wugong Mountain. One day, he heard an unusually pleasant sound coming from the stream below. Following the noise, he discovered it was the sound of rushing water hitting a giant, drum-shaped rock. Striking the stone three times with a wooden stick, the emperor produced three thunderous drum-like sounds. Instantly, auspicious clouds appeared over the Golden Summit of Wugong Mountain, accompanied by brilliant Buddha’s light. Delighted, Emperor Qianlong exclaimed, “A stone that can sound like a drum—this is truly rare in the world.” He then bestowed upon it the name “Shigu Temple” (Stone Drum Temple).
