Mao Zedong’s Former Residence in Xunwu
Mao Zedong’s Former Residence in Xunwu is a classic site of red tourism.
Mao Zedong’s former residence is located on Mati Hill to the south of the city. It is a two-story building made of river stones and lime mortar. Constructed in 1917, the building originally served as the residence of a Christian pastor. In May 1930, Comrade Mao Zedong conducted his famous “Xunwu Investigation” here. After the Red Army withdrew, enemy forces captured Xunwu and burned down this small building. It was not until 1972 that the building was restored to its original appearance and listed as a provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit. Today, the Mao Zedong Former Residence building is broad and majestic, with eight meter-high red pillars standing proudly along the front and right-side eaves, forming a three-meter-wide right-angle corridor. Vigorous and verdant camphor trees, resilient cycads, and clusters of orange trees surround the Mao Zedong Former Residence, with their green leaves complementing the red walls and blue tiles. To the right of the small building is the Xunwu Investigation Exhibition Hall, which displays a collection of precious revolutionary relics and historical documents.
