The Zhaijiu’ao Scenic Area in Ganzhou is located in Sanxi Township, northeastern Gan County, southern Jiangxi Province, bordering Xingguo—the “General County”—to the north. Situated along the picturesque Ping River, it lies 55 kilometers from downtown Ganzhou, with a total planned area of approximately 200 hectares.

Known as the “Little Danxia of Southern Jiangxi,” Zhaijiu’ao features beautiful landscapes, soaring cliffs that seem to pierce the sky, clusters of rock formations, deep blue waters, serene valleys, lush forests, and swaying bamboo shadows. The continuous red cliffs appear as if dyed with sunset hues from afar, while up close they reveal a richly colorful palette. Mysterious caves and uniquely shaped rocks are hidden among the mountains, creating magnificent and spectacular views.

The scenic area currently has one reservoir, three lakes, numerous mountain streams, and two major creeks flowing through its main valleys. With abundant rainfall year-round, the area enjoys plentiful springs. The landscape remains largely pristine, rich in diverse plant life. Vegetation grows in pure communities, naturally coexisting in harmonious ecosystems. There are many grand old camphor trees that provide refreshing shade in the summer heat; scattered bamboo groves add a fresh and graceful touch. The rocky surfaces are covered with wild plants such as kudzu vines, false ground orchids, bird’s eye grass, Lespedeza, brackens, ferns, and miscanthus. In the valley streams, you can find azaleas, arisaemas, smilaxes, Sichuan pepper, spotted ladyslipper orchids, and dysosma. Common aquatic plants along the creek edges include azolla, pondweed, water hyacinth, giant duckweed, water bamboo leaves, duckweed, water caltrop, amaranth seeds, and water celery. The mountain areas are mainly covered with coniferous species such as Masson’s pine, while valleys are subtly fragrant with honeysuckle, gardenias, and wild lilies, filling the air with delightful scents.

The area is home to ancient historical relics and a strong cultural heritage of Southern Jiangxi. The Dingguang Mountain Temple, built during the Song Dynasty, dates back over a thousand years. The ancient gate ruins of General Fortress, constructed in the Southern Song period, have withstood over 800 years of history and still stand proudly atop the rugged ridge. The military management school founded by Mr. Chiang Ching-kuo was relocated from Ganzhou to Dingguang Mountain during the War of Resistance and later became Dingguang Mountain Primary School—traces of its former site can still be found. The remnants of the once-bustling ancient post road also offer a fascinating glimpse into the past.
