Jishan Mountain

Gàn County is an ancient Hakka settlement, home to numerous renowned mountains. Among them, the most famous is Jishan Mountain. With an elevation of 418.9 meters and covering an area of approximately 2.5 square kilometers, Jishan Mountain is located within Nántáng. It stands out due to its peculiar landscape and rich cultural heritage. Commonly known as Jiling or Jinǎo, and formerly called Jishan, the mountain earned its name because its shape resembles the Chinese character “几” (meaning “a few” or “several”). Later, due to the presence of muntjac deer and related legends, the name “Jishan” (Deer Mountain) became more widely used, while “Jishan” (几山) gradually faded from use due to the perception that the character “几” seemed artificially coined. Jishan Mountain is situated about 2 kilometers southwest of Nántáng Town in Gàn County, encompassing three administrative villages: Láotián Village (including Jiaowaonao, Shèzǐnǎo, and Yuántǔbù), Nántáng Village (including Hétángkēng), and Chuánbù Village. It borders Nántáng Village and Chuánbù Village to the east, Jiǎntián Village in Jíshì Town to the south, Qīngxī Village to the west, and Huángwū Village to the north. The entire tourist area spans a planned zone of 5.765 square kilometers. The location enjoys excellent accessibility, with the Jiāngxīng Highway and Píngjiāng River running through the region, and it lies close to the north-south transportation artery — the Beijing-Kowloon Railway. Just 42 kilometers from downtown Gànzhōu City, it sits at the junction of Gàn, Xīngguó, and Yùdū counties, enjoying well-developed land and water transport links. Although the tourism area is still in a relatively undeveloped and “hidden in the mountains, unknown to many” phase, it has already attracted many residents from Gànzhōu City and surrounding areas for pilgrimage, leisure sightseeing, hiking, and fitness.
