The Ganzhou Zhaijiu’ao Scenic Area is located in Sanxi Township, northeastern Gan County, southern Jiangxi Province, bordering Xingguo (known as the “County of Generals”) to the north. Situated along the picturesque Ping River, it lies 55 kilometers from downtown Ganzhou and covers a total planned area of approximately 200 hectares.

Zhaijiu’ao is often praised as the “Little Danxia of Southern Jiangxi.” The area boasts stunning scenery, with towering cliffs, steep rock faces, clusters of jagged rocks, crystal-clear deep pools, serene valleys, lush forests, and graceful bamboo shadows. The continuous red cliffs appear like a painted sunset when viewed from afar and showcase vibrant colors up close. Hidden within the mountains are unique rock formations and beautiful caves, creating a spectacular and magnificent landscape.

The scenic area currently features one reservoir, three lakes, numerous mountain streams, and two major creeks that flow through the main valleys. The region receives abundant rainfall year-round, ensuring plentiful springs. The landscape remains largely in its pristine natural state, rich in diverse plant life. Vegetation communities are pure, naturally coexisting in harmonious ecosystems. There are many grand old camphor trees that provide refreshing shade in the summer heat. Scattered stands of moso bamboo add a fresh and elegant beauty. The rocky surfaces are covered with wild plants such as kudzu vines, false ground orchids, spiny jointweed, Lespedeza bicolor, ferns, and various grasses. The mountain streams and valleys host plants like azaleas, Arisaema, smilax, Sichuan pepper, spotted ladyslipper orchids, and Dysosma versipellis. Along the creek water surfaces, common plants include Azolla, pondweed, water hyacinth, giant duckweed, water bamboo leaves, duckweed, water caltrop, amaranth seeds, and water celery. The mountain areas are mainly covered with coniferous species like Masson’s pine. In the valleys, plants such as honeysuckle, gardenia, and wild lilies quietly exude their fragrant aromas, refreshing the senses.

The scenic area has long-standing historical relics and a rich cultural heritage of Southern Jiangxi. The Dingguang Mountain Temple, built during the Song Dynasty, has a history of over a thousand years. The ancient gate ruins of General Fortress, constructed during the Southern Song Dynasty, have withstood over 800 years of vicissitudes and still stand proudly on the rugged ridge. The military-managed school founded by Chiang Ching-kuo was relocated from Ganzhou to Dingguang Mountain during the Anti-Japanese War and later became Dingguang Mountain Primary School—traces of its former site can still be found. The remnants of the once-bustling ancient post road also offer a fascinating glimpse into the past.
