Former Site of Maodian Customs Office

The Former Site of Maodian Customs Office is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

The Maodian Customs Office of the Chinese Soviet Republic is located in Weigao Group, Maodian Village, Maodian Town, Ganxian County, Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province. It faces south with a north orientation, features an earth-and-wood structure, consists of one main hall and three side rooms, has a depth of 7.05 meters and a width of 11.45 meters, with a total floor area of approximately 81 square meters.

The Maodian Customs Office was the earliest established, largest in scale, and made the greatest contribution to the revolution among the red customs offices during the Soviet Area period, making it a site of considerable research value.

In February 1931, the Ganxian County Soviet Government decided to establish a tax office in Maodian, staffed with a director, accountants, bookkeepers, cashiers, inspectors, and an armed squad totaling over 20 personnel. Maodian was the confluence point of the Xinfeng, Xingguo, and Yudu rivers, and a major hub for goods entering and leaving Ganzhou. After the establishment of the Maodian Tax Office, it averaged a monthly income of 10,000 silver dollars, with a daily intake as high as 2,000 silver dollars and a minimum of 100 silver dollars, helping to resolve the economic difficulties faced by the Soviet government at the time. Later, Zeng Shan, Chairman of the Jiangxi Provincial Soviet Government, visited Ganxian and, noting the significant revenue generated by the tax office, instructed in the winter of 1932 that it be placed under the jurisdiction of the Jiangxi Provincial Soviet Government. In the spring of 1933, it came under central jurisdiction and was renamed the Maodian Customs Office. The office was successively located in Yangtang Dam, Wenxi, and Jiangkou Pond. The head of the customs office was Xu Yuzhai, and an armed company was added as the number of merchants and merchant ships coming to the Soviet Area increased. At its establishment, the Maodian Customs Office had over 20 staff members; the wharf in front of the office served as the customs checkpoint, equipped with one barge and two rowboats. Inspectors checked vessels along the Gong River daily to collect customs duties. The Guan Di Temple to the east served as the barracks for the customs guards.
